Teaching Databases at SoftUni

January 30, 2015 By Boris Hristov 2 Comments

softuni-bulgariaSome months ago I delivered a 3-hour seminar for the students at SoftUni. Back then we talked about their first steps with SQL Server and we covered the basics – how to set up an instance, configure the security, create the databases they need and connect their application to that. Now, however, it’s time for the students to pass a whole course on databases and I am happy to “announce” that I will join the trainers team that is lead by the founder of the university – Svetlin Nakov(t|b). I will cover just two of the topics during the course – the one on performance tuning and the one on concurrency – really important topics as some of you know. The course will start on the 2nd of February and I am already looking forward to seeing the students! Stay tuned as more interesting information is coming up really soon…

Update: Here is a short interview with me from the opening day of the course. It’s in Bulgarian though!

This year is going absolutely great! I have visited and spoken at almost 10 countries, delivered courses for both students and organisations and now I am pleased to announce that I am delivering one more course! This time the focus will be on SQL Server Development. 12 people already enrolled and we will fire this up on 18th of October. The course will be a 40-hour fun, but intensive experience in which the students will learn many, many things ranging from how to write simple queries and stored procedures to how to actually optimise code and make it run fast. Really fast.

Can’t wait to see my new group already! However, there’s quite some work to do before that, so wish me good luck for my session at SQLSaturday #311 in Sofia which is this Saturday and stay tuned for 2 SQLHangouts that are coming in the next 10 days!

Cheers!

Update: A few hours the course ended – an update. I had great time with my students! In those 4 weekends we learned a lot (I also learned a ton from them, trust me) – we started from the basics – what are databases and what TSQL actually is and ended somewhere in the concurrency and performance tuning topics. That is quite a journey and I am extremely proud and happy that we went through it successfully! Now, we all have to move on. I hope and I am sure they will all do well and I am starting my recordings for my second course for Pluralsight. More information soon…

My First Course for Pluralsight!

July 16, 2014 By Boris Hristov Leave a Comment

Auditing SQL Server with Policy-Based Management

I am extremely happy to share that my first course for Pluralsight just went online! It is “just slightly” touching on the topic of SQL Server Policy-Based Management(for 5 hours) and as this is my course I would highly appreciate any feedback from all of you that will decide and manage to watch it!

What you can expect is a very demo-intensive course(80% of the videos are actually demos) and it starts from zero and ends at the moment when we are familiar with what PBM can do for us, how it works, how you can use it with Centralised Management Server and how we can actually make the Enterprise Policy Management Framework to generate beautiful reports. I am a serious fan of Policy-Based Management and the reason for this is extremely simple – it saves you time. OK, it actually saves you a lot of time! So if you want to know how you can audit your environment with as few clicks as possible – I really belive the couse will be of great help to you! So I hope you will find it useful and I hope you will learn a lot of new things!

Enjoy and keep me posted on what you think I could have done better!

My third group of students!

Boris Hristov and SQL Server Students
In the last three years I have been honored to have a small group of students(that’s not the university classes that I teach at Sofia University) that I teach in the basics (OK, not only the basics) of SQL Server administration! This year the course passed so quickly it’s mind blowing! 40 hours of quite an intensive training are now behind our backs and I have to say I am really happy with the results accomplished. We started from the basics and ended somewhere in the HA territory which gave the students quite a broad knowledge and experience of what they can do with SQL Server and how they can help their current or future customers/organizations.

Looking forward to next year already.

Hangout #014 with Alberto Gastaldo on Teaching SQL Server

January 27, 2014 By Boris Hristov Leave a Comment

It’s #14 and this time I am joined by a friend of mine from Italy – Alberto Gastaldo. We met in Italy on the SQLSaturday in Verona and we immediately started talking about delivering trainings on SQL Server and teaching people. That’s why I asked him to join me for a SQLHangout and give some of his advices on what does it mean and what must a trainer consider in case he wants to deliver his training in a proper way! Listen to our discussion and the advices given and I hope that you will find it helpful if you want to enter in the so called “training space”! Enjoy!

Oh, and if you want to learn more about Presentation Skills, you can check the 3 part series of blog posts that I wrote on the topic. Start here.
