I am a busy guy and whenever someone tries to waste my time, he/she gets immediately ignored(in one way or another). Very frequently I am receiving invitations on LinkedIn from recruiters and 99% of the times they all have one of those 2 problems:
- They do not introduce themselves in the invitation!
- Even worse – not only they don’t mention who they are or why they want to connect with you, but when you ask them(if you decide to be a good person, spend the time and make the effort) why they have sent you an invitation, they reply with something like: “I wanted to expand my network”!
HRs, if you think that this is the correct way to use and try to recruit people on LinkedIn, I have bad news for you – you are wrong! What’s more – the best professionals will never spend the time considering accepting your invitation if you approach them this way. Heck, do you go to someone on the street and just shaking his hand without introducing? I hope not. It’s the same on LinkedIn, so start thinking in that direction and do the necessary! Otherwise you and your invitations will continue to be ignored or even worse – you will be removed from someone’s connections once you were actually accepted (yes, I have done that many times already because of point 2 above). Time is the most precious resource on the planet, so if you are not going to respect people’s time do not expect anyone to respect you…
P.S. I didn’t want to do a blog post about this, but it’s getting worse and worse day after day. I really hope that at least one recruiter will see it and the written above will make him change his “LinkedIn behaviour”. If that happens, I think spending the time writing it was actually worth it.
